Memorial Day is typically considered the official kickoff of the summer tourism season and Memorial Day 2010 in this region was kickin’. Lower gas prices, publicity highlighting New Bern ‘s 300th anniversary, beautiful weather and cabin fever may have brought out some having to pinch pennies, some area merchants said.
