Undernourished Horses

It is important to monitor your horses weight regularly, especially if he is prone to weight loss. A good way to monitor weight is with a weigh tape that can be purchased at most local tack shops or feed stores. If you use this tape at the same time each week it will be about 90% accurate and will let you know if there is any potential problems with your horse with weight loss being a symptom. There is also a thing called a weighbridge that your horse can walk up on to get an accurate weight, however these are not owned by most people as they are very expensive and only the large horse breeders can afford to install them.

When a horse looses weight, he looses his fat first and then the muscle tone. In this way he is just like humans. Usually a horse has a good amount of fat in reserve that he has stored during warm months to prepare for lean winters. It is inherent in their nature to store this fat. By the time weight loss can be seen on a horse, there has been a significant loss of weight already so it is important to keep track of any changes.

One way to put some weight back on your horse is to feed him “conditioning” cubes or feed. There are many varieties on the market such as Spillers Condition Cubes. You should see results fairly quickly in as soon as two weeks in most cases.

Feed more grain than your horses usual portion. Use a feed that is higher in fiber and lower in starch as this reduces the chances of your horse exhibiting bad behavior from his over abundance of energy. More protein and energy intake builds weight. Low energy feeds can be fed from 1kg to 6 kg without your horse going thru the roof with energy.

If you have no good grazing land, offer more hay during the day to provide extra roughage and nutrients. Of course fresh grass is much better, but the hay will still provide “gut fill” which creates heat from the process of fermentation. Try to stay away from large round bales as they can develop mold and are not suitable for horses.

Lastly, consult your veterinarian if you are unsure how to best feed your horse to get your horse back to the proper weight and health. If nothing else they can suggest a good nutritionist that will guide you to the proper diet and supplements.

Baking Up Profits

Has anyone ever told you to sell that delicious pound cake? Have friends and family insisted you could be making a mint selling your delicious sugar cookies? If this sounds like you, then you could be baking up profits from your kitchen. All over the country there are countless home-based bakeries delivering heavenly baked goods throughout the community.

There are many responsibilities that go with starting a home-based bakery. You will first need to have a Food Regulatory Specialist/Food Compliance Officer come to your home and inspect it. In most cases the Department of Agriculture is the governing agency that will oversee your compliance inspection. Your kitchen will need to be inspected to assure that it is clean and in proper condition to produce baked goods that are suitable for human consumption. Although a license is not required for a home-based bakery, and a separate kitchen is not needed, you will have to comply with special conditions set down by the Department of Agriculture or your local regulatory agency.

There are currently 11 states that allow home-based bakers to sell their baked goods/candies to the public. The states are: Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia ; all others should check with their local (county) health departments or food safety agencies.

Operating a home-based bakery means finding your niche. Do you cake decorate; make custom cookies or a fabulous dry jerk rub? Years ago when the country was predominately rural there were many home-based bakers and home cooks and bakers sold their jams, preserves and jellies, along with homemade breads, pastries, cakes, pies and cookies.

Three years ago the Raleigh Farmer’s Market asked home-bakers to sell their goods at the Crafters Shed away from the main market area. Today there is a specific area for home-based bakers and the public is flocking to their tables. The baked goods are fresh, delicious and offer a variety not available in grocery stores.

Let there be no mistake, operating a home-based bakery is hard work. It means long hours and a commitment to quality, but for those who take on the challenge it is by far the best job in the whole. You set your own hours, you provide the public with delicious goods that can only be duplicated by you and for those with families they are their when the children get home from school.

The down side of the profession use to be the isolation, but a home-based bakery forum has been created to help bakers stay in touch with one another and support one another building camaraderie among home-based bakers that never existed before.

Baking for a living is an honorable profession, plus Internet access offers many bakers the opportunity to sell their products online. For example, Diane, the owner of Maine’s Cakes and Cookies, has been baking from home for more than five years. She loves what she does and proves the public with incredible baked goods. This is also a wonderful way for those who cook for a living, e.g. personal chef’s to offer their clients a little touch of something fresh from the oven.

The next time someone say’s, you really should think about selling that pie or cake or cookie. Look into operating a home-based bakery. You never know where the journey will take you and good home-baked goods are like jobs, hard to find.

Cycling – Your Ultimate Guide

Cycling is one of the best alternative sports hobbies to maintain one’s health and fitness. While there are lots of activities to choose from such as combat sports, group exercises such as yoga, Pilates or dance, cycling seems to stand out because ultimate workout of all muscles is achieved with the aid of an equipment, which for many, is also a prized possession owners love to display around. For this reason, most people who have decided to get serious on the sport, do not easily quit because of their “bond and commitment” to their partner bikes. This is of course not the case in other exercises.

Cycling likewise can be very entertaining because it is not confined within the four corners of a dance room or boxing ring. Cycling takes place outdoors so one should definitely find pleasure from exploring nature and various places, while achieving the benefits of a full body workout.

Cycling is not all about flashing gear or making the wheels run though. It requires commitment and discipline as serious riders always try to conquer different and more challenging terrains each time.

The first aspect to consider of course is choosing the right bike, ensuring it is fitted with the parts of the right quality or size. Brands to consider are Raleigh, Shimano, Haro, Specialized, Federal, Rock Schox and Speedplay. Of course for you to match the performance level of your bike, you ought to be geared up as well with the right cycling clothes, most especially cycling shoes which helps pass on your energy to the pedals which act as your push force.

Will Omabacare Eat Into Your Retirement? Create a Firewall

This is a tough question because none of us will know the answer until it becomes fact. The healthcare bill is roaring along like a runaway freight train, yet no one in government can say with certainty if will create jobs…or take them away. No one in government can say with certainty if it will eventually bankrupt this country…or it will promote a new wave of prosperity. No one in government can say with certainty if the new taxes imposed upon us to pay for it will bankrupt us taxpayers…or put extra money in our pockets. It’s all a speculation. No one knows for certain what the outcome will be.

I’m Paying Now For Bad Career Decisions

Hello, I am an old codger, 73, who made too many bad career decisions over my lifetime—decisions that left me without a cushy pension. I still work a part time job and depend on Social Security and Medicare—but all of these are in jeopardy. If you are one of those fortunate folks that made the right career decisions and are living comfortably, then this article probably won’t be of much benefit for you. This article is directed at those out there that are genuinely concerned about what our government is doing and what you can do to offset some of the consequences.

This Has Nothing To Do About Politics

Please understand that I’m not some wild-eyed political activist. I’m not talking about politics at all. I’m talking about survival during some very uncertain times. I’ve been characterized as a survivor most of my adult life. Most of my friends, relatives and former classmates who are my age have been retired for years. For me personally, retirement sounds like a scary situation—I’d be bored to death. As long as I have some semblance of good health I must keep occupied. In a little bit I’ll tell you what I’m doing to maintain my sanity, and help out with the monthly bills.

I’ve lived through the same economic downturns and recessions as you did. I learned that if you leave it alone, the economy will rebound on its own—it always has, and it always will if government would stop meddling with it. Meanwhile each of us has established a lifestyle that may be sufficient—but could always use improvement. So what are the options?

Some College

I have a part time job that pays well for a high school graduate with about one year of college behind him. But at times I wonder whether it’s worth the cost. I commute 42 miles round-trip each working day. Factor in the cost of maintaining a car, insurance and the wear and tear on the car and me, and I question the value of the income it produces. On the other hand, could I stand retirement if it meant scaling back the lifestyle I’ve become accustomed to?

A couple of months ago I had an idea—why not look into some sort of activity that I could pursue from home. My job is writing complex technical articles for a manufacturer of crime scene investigation equipment. There was a time when I had a lot of first-hand experience in using that CSI stuff. I asked my employer about “out-sourcing” this work—I could do it from home. No deal, no comment. So I looked into finding something else I could do that didn’t involve a commute. What I stepped into at first was like falling into an open cesspool.

The Retail Store Is Close To Extinction

Internet marketing has become a serious threat to the “retail store” way of life we know. Chances are buy things you need over the Internet—most of us do. It saves time, avoids the crowds (and the swine flu they may be carrying with them), and it saves on gasoline!

I wondered if there might be a way I could get involved in Internet marketing in some fashion. I soon learned that I can—but you know the old saying, “Let the Buyer Beware.” I started clicking on those pesky little ads that are plastered all over the websites I visit. “Start Your Own Home Business,” “Make Big Money On The Internet,” “I Made Over $10,000 Last Month On The Internet.” You’ve seen them and maybe you were tempted to click on them.

It’s Not A Get Rich Quick Scam

The most successful “experts” in Internet marketing will tell you that over 90% of these “Get-Rich-Quick” schemes are bogus, pure garbage, and the only ones getting rich quick are the scum-bags selling them. After a couple of miss-starts, and a little over $100 spent on crap, I decided to find the 10% that were genuine, honest plans that could help me to get started and not wipe out the little bit of savings I had left.

Begin Your Home-Based Business In three Easy Steps

What I decided to try was “affiliate marketing.” It works like this:
1.    I signed up (at no cost) as an affiliate with ClickBank (CB). This 10-year-old company has paid out over $1.4 Billion in affiliate commissions. CB carries 10s of thousands of electronic books (e-books) covering virtually any topic you can think of.  All products carry a 100% money back guarantee.
2.    Next, I opened the CB Marketplace and searched for products I know a little bit about. I started with Digital Photography and Weddings (mostly because I still photograph weddings occasionally). I contacted the authors of these e-books and signed on (again at no cost). They gave me a “Hop Link,” that people searching for information on these two subjects would click on to purchase the e-book.
3.    CB takes the credit card information and immediately sends the e-book to the buyer.  And every two weeks CB sends the affiliate a check. Commissions average 50%-75%. It’s all done on autopilot. I can be at home asleep or walking the dog when orders are processed.

Now, how do I get people to click on the Hop Link. The method I use is “Article Marketing.” You are reading an example. Below is the Hop Link to ClickBank. I write articles and post them on article directories like this one (once again at no cost to me).

The only problem was, I had no idea how to write articles. My forte was technical manuals—stuff like how to develop latent fingerprints, test for illegal narcotics, how to search and photograph a crime scene, and so forth. Once again I turned to the Internet and sure enough, I found an e-book that taught me—step-by-step—in language I could understand, how to write articles and how and where to post them. The $39.00 I spent on this e-book renewed my faith in the free market and in my own ability to supplement my income. It will do the same for you!

Don Penven (Treefern) is a freelance writer with locations in Raleigh and Morehead City, NC. He is an affiliate marketer representing nearly a dozen different e-books and downloadable software. His articles appear on many of the top-rated article directories.

Did this article answer some of your questions? Did it start you thinking that starting your own home business may be a very good idea? If you are ready to look at a new venture with minimal cost, minimal risk, then Click Below for more information. This e-book is sold with a 100% Money Back Guarantee!

Don strongly recommends the purchase of “Turn Words Into Traffic,” the e-book that gave him the knowledge to supplement his income. For more information:

One last thought, nearly 90% of the newcomers to Internet marketing fail in the first year–mostly because they just give up. Let’s face it, if it was truly that EASY, a few more million people would be trying it! So if you are just a tire-kicker looking for a fast buck, you won’t find it here.

Fine Tune Your Breathing

Did you know that you can adjust your breathing to fit your situation? Generally, we move through our lives without a conscious effort to breathe.

Breathing is an autonomic process we don’t have to think about unless we have some sort of health challenge. Most often, a change in the intensity of breathing is simply the reflection of kind of significant change in physical exertion.

While most of us perceive our breathing as efficient, it can often be less than optimally effective. With practice, you can develop simple skills to enhance your energy level, sustain mental focus, as well as unwind and relax stress and tension. My guest consultant this month is Cyndi Bulka, a local Yoga and meditation teacher and owner of Moving Mantra Yoga Studio, located in North Raleigh. She will review three techniques to facilitate these processes.

Effective breathing involves a thoughtful practice of “Breath Awareness”. This most basic breathing practice involves an understanding that we breathe in patterns that can vary with the seasons, time of day, or our physical and emotional states. We breathe in a pattern that radiates from our navel center and permeates the full dimension of our body; front to back, side to side, up into the chest and down in to the pelvic abdomen. The breath can be divided into four phases: active inhalation, suspension, active exhalation, and rest. All of these elements of the breath can be sensed by simply reclining on your back, and feeling the movement of the breath within. In and of itself, this practice of Breath Awareness is relaxing and beneficial to the nervous system.

Varying the length of the different phases of the breath can lead to a different quality of energy in your body and mind. Whether you are feeling dull and exhausted and need a pick-me-up, are feeling anxious and nervous and wish to calm yourself down, or are needing to balance your energy to remain centered and focused in any given situation, the following practices can be utilized for specific effects. Try lying down in a comfortable position, or sit tall in a comfortable chair to experiment with these simple techniques.

The average breath has a cadence that spans over 10-12 seconds. Try creating a pattern with a 3-4 second inhale, pause for 1-2 seconds, exhale for 3-4 seconds, and rest for 1-2 seconds. Repeat this in a 10 breath cycle. From this pattern you can adapt according to the state of energy you wish to achieve. Be careful to relax in to the practice and to avoid forcing the breath in either direction so that you are not strongly pulling up on the inhales, nor pushing down on the exhales. Should any of these practices create a feeling of tension in the body, please return to a relaxed, unmanipulated breathing pattern.

Balancing Breath- This is a grounding exercise that steadies the mind and body. Work towards establishing a rhythm where all four phases are of equal duration. For example, a 4-count inhalation, pause, exhalation and rest.

Energizing Breath- This reduces lethargy and increases sharpness of the mind by lengthening the active inhalation and the suspension of the inhalation. For example, try an 8-count inhalation; a 4-count suspension, a 4-count exhalation and a 2-count rest.

Calming Breath- This allows your body and mind to slow down and relax. Try extending the length of the active exhalation and linger in the resting phase of the exhalation cycle. For example; a 4-count inhalation, 2-count suspension, 8-count exhalation and 4 count rest.

After you attempt a technique, revisit your breath awareness. Notice the rhythm of your natural breath, the sensations in your body as your breathe, your mental and emotional states. With further practice you can develop simple, innate tools to better manage life’s challenges.

Dr. Howie Shareff (http://www.youcallthisyoga.com)has been passionate about relationships in his career, family, and community. These relationships supplied him with perspectives on thousands of people’s health habits. He found that emotional stress and physical strain were tolerated but not addressed. These problems, combined with his own issues ( physical challenges from treating patients, recreational sports, and arthritis), led Dr. Shareff to create a beginner’s yoga DVD. The goal was to provide a program that allows anyone to practice yoga anywhere, anytime.

Exercise And Your Dog

Are you worried that your dog doesn’t get enough exercise because of a weight problem and does he just sit around all day like a couch potato?

If experts have discovered that exercise is key to human health and wellbeing, it is safe to say that your Dog will benefit from the same research. Physical and mental health is vastly improved in both species when exercise is introduced in to their lives.

A few things that exercise can do for your pet are improve muscle tone, increase bone density, improve joint mobility, improve cardiovascular capacity, better digestion and promote healthier blood pressure. The state of mind for your Dog is extremely important for good quality of life, and an exercise program will relieve stress in many ways. The benefits are too many to mention, including lessening the risk of many diseases.

In obedience training, exercise plays a key role in your pets life. In most cases, exercise before any kind of training will give you a calmer participant than a pet that has a lot of pent-up energy possibly cause him or her not to listen.

An added benefit to regular exercise is helping you and your dog to form a strong bond. Training and exercise promote a bond with your pet that there is no equal to. Dogs in general want desperately to please their masters and enjoy performing well in a training situation. Besides the training aspect, playing games is a very good way to get exercise and have fun with them at the same time. Throwing a frisbee across a field or any other way to cause movement will benefit your pet. There are even indoor things you can do for exercise such as throwing a dog toy to be retrieved and brought back to you. Play tug of war with an old sock or even hide a treat of some kind for him or her to find. All good fun.

If you are extremely busy and just can’t give your dog the time, there are services will walk your dog for you daily. You can even hire the neighborhood child to walk your dog every day. Doggie treadmills are made especially for dogs will also give him exercise. There are many makes and models of doggie doors you can purchase so that your dog can go outside any time they want.

If you do have the time, there are many dog competitions that you and your dog can become a part of. Dog sledding, sport hunting or herding competitions, lure coursing, fly tracking and obedience competitions. All involve movement and all require lots of exercise.

There are also free classes that you can sign your dog up for such as Doga (yoga for dogs). Doga has stretching and moving and promotes a calm wellbeing.

Just remember, it’s important not to get your dog used to just sitting around all day. Getting the proper amount of exercise can help him live a longer and happier life that you will want to share with him.

Pet Diseases and Diet

If you are feeding your dog store bought food that is produced by the large manufacturing companies, your pet may face some health problems. Some large manufacturers are using products in their food that has been removed from human foods. Find out what you are feeding your dog or cat.

Like most of the population, you would think that dog and cat food manufacturers are paying close attention to a healthy formula for your pets’ good health and wellbeing. It may surprise you to know that not all manufacturers do, and that some use discarded animal parts that can actually harm your dog.

Not long ago, pet owners were shocked to find out that the food they were feeding their dogs had toxic ingredients and were causing many deaths in the pet world. Healthy dogs were fed this store-bought dog food that was well trusted by the unsuspecting public. Federal testing of some of the cat and dog food and the wheat gluten used in their production turned up the chemical melamine, which can be toxic in high doses. Gluten brings elasticity and chewiness to baked products, but in this case was toxic.

Know what’s in your pets food. Make sure to always read the labels. Watch for by-products, which can contain diseased and contaminated slaughterhouse meats. Healthy dogs and cats can have their lives shortened by what they are eating every day. Also, meat from animals that have been drugged and chemical preservatives are also dangerous.

If at all possible, feed your pet all natural dog foods that have not been on the shelf for a long period of time. Food should be manufactured in smaller quantities to allow freshness. Taking Care of Your Horses Hooves

Your horses hooves are extremely important in the way of caring for your horses health. It is best to have them trimmed and shod every six to eight weeks. Usually, the ferrier puts you on his schedule for six weeks out unless something comes up to put it off a week or so. You must also pick your horses feet before and after riding him. Pick up his foot and working from heel to toe, take your hoof pick and clean out the dirt and debris from the hoof and shoe. Dirt being left in the hoof can cause fungal infections and other problem with the legs. And stones left in the hoof can hurt the horses foot. Your stable floor should be kept as dry as possible allowing for proper drainage so that the animal won’t be standing in a wet stall. or paddock. Standing in a wet environment for too long will cause the hoof to dry and crack.

The Hoof wall is also important to take care of as it controls the moisture balance. Wash off the foot carefully with a wet hoof brush. In a dry climate this will keep in the hoof moisture. In damp wet climates use hoof oil on the underside of the foot to stop the hooves from becoming weak. It also gives the foot a nice outer appearance. You can ask your ferrier to advise you on what to apply to keep the hoof in good condition.

Feed is important to a horses foot health. Low protein or an unbalanced diet will cause unhealthy horses and hooves. Supplements may be necessary to add to your horses diet. Some horses, when put on a diet with levels of biotin and methionine, will show improved hoof health. Biotin is a vitamin that promotes the health and growth of keratin and other connective tissue. Methionine is an emino acid that is essential for the growth of healthy hooves. Products high in zinc and copper also promote also helps the hoof remain healthy.

It is also important to remember that unless you are riding your horse frequently or in rough terrain, there is no need to have shoes put on. Many horse do just fine with no shoes at all, and in many cases horses that have had shoes on for long periods of time can take a break from them for a month just to rest the hoof.

A few other supplements for hoof care are Manganese, Selenium, Iodine, Lysine, Threonine and B vitamins. The hoof wall is like a humans fingernail, and it grows very slowly at a rate of about three-eights to one-half inch per month. It can take up to a year for healthy tissue to reach the bottom of the hoof, therefore any supplements may take weeks or months to show any results on the hoof.

Some Like it Mashed – The Story of Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Ever since Sir Walter Raleigh and his bunch of sea-faring men brought potatoes to England from the New World, they have been used in many dishes all over Europe. French fries, potato chips and mashed potatoes have become part of our daily diet thanks to them.

The mashed potatoes recipe, especially, has had a memorable history. It all started in 1771, where a Frenchman, Antoine Parmentier suggested potatoes as a theme for a competition. He won first prize. He cultivated potatoes and even had a group of royal troops guard a farm near Paris. However, the guards may have not been vigilant enough, because peasants managed to steal some from the farm. This effectively launched potatoes into French and, much later, European cuisine.

There are many variations of mashed potatoes recipe around the world. Some like it plain; others add cheese, bacon bits and even wasabi. The French add egg yolk and style them à la Parmentier’ in a homage to the man who brought the spuds to them. In England, there are still traditional-style shops selling ‘bangers and mash’ and ‘pies and mash’, favorites among the working class. Aside from that, mashed potatoes are added in shepherd’s pie, Colcannon and potato croquette.

In making mashed potatoes, you’ll need:
- one (1) cup of heavy cream (use low-fat cream if you’re watching your figure),
- half (1/2) cup of salted butter,
- salt for seasoning and
- six (6) medium-sized potatoes.

The best potatoes for mashing are red and Russet Burbank potatoes. They give a rough and unique texture to the end product. If you don’t like lumps in your taters, use Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes. These give a smooth and creamy feel to the whole dish.

First, peel of the skin of your spuds. Make sure you take of the eyes, which are flecks of skin embedded in the potato. If you want a rustic taste, you can keep about half of the skin, because the skin contains many nutrients, although they’re harder to mash later. Submerge them in cold water to prevent them browning over.

Next, cut them to 2-inch chunks and add them to a decent-sized pot. Pour water until the spuds are totally submerged. Adding salt is optional at this stage. Cover the pot and apply high heat until it comes to a boil. Reduce it to a simmer and allow it for 15 to 20 minutes. To check if they’re cooked, poke it with a knife and it should have no trouble entering. If the taters cling to the knife, they need a few more minutes.

Drain the water and allow them to dry, while you heat up some cream and butter in a saucepan at a low temperature. Now comes the fun part; the mashing. Use a food mill or a potato ricer. Avoid using electrical mixers, since they will over-mix the taters and break the starch molecules. The starch is what that gives the dish its wonderful texture. Mix them to a nice and lumpy mixture.

Stir in your butter and cream into the bowl. The following stage requires your imagination. To finish this mashed potatoes recipe you an add anything that suits your palate into the mash. It could be chives, parsley, cheese or leeks.

Potatoes are great for your health since they improve glucose tolerance and protect against colon cancer. I bet Sir Walter Raleigh didn’t know that when he thought potatoes are only fit to be thrown into animal feed.
